在姆巴佩还为摩纳哥效力时，皇马就对球员很感兴趣，双方自2017年来，已有过数次接触。当时，皇马CEO何塞-安赫尔-桑切斯与摩纳哥俱乐部进行过谈判，对方要价1.2亿欧固定转会费以及3000万浮动，姆巴佩父亲则索要1200万欧税后年薪加进球奖金，弗洛伦蒂诺拒绝了这些要求。最终，姆巴佩在2017年夏天租借加盟巴黎，并在次年被1.8亿欧强制买断。
